The Top Reasons Youre Not Hearing Back After Sending Dozens of Job Applications

The Top Reasons Youre Not Hearing Back After Sending Dozens of Job ApplicationsThe Top Reasons Youre Not Hearing Back After Sending Dozens of Job Applications Unfortunately, rejection is an unavoidable aspect of the job search. With so many different companies looking for different qualities, you cannot be everything to everyone - and as such, youre going to get rejected (or even more likely, hear radio silence), every now and then. But if youve sent out 10 or 20 applications and havent heard a word in response, its time to stop thinking of it as a series of flukes and departure thinking of it as a pattern. More likely than not, theres a reason youre not hearing back. The good news? Its often entirely in your power to fix whats wrong. In the spirit of radical candor , here are a few of the most common reasons youre not hearing back from recruiters and hiring managers, and what you can do to pivot to a winning strategy. In their first-ever job search, most people take a spray-and-pray approach, which involves applying to just about every position that catches their eye. While many quickly learn that this isnt the best strategy, others never grow out of it - perhaps they lucked out with this tactic early on and mistakenly credited their success to it. But this game plan will burn you sooner rather than later, cautions Roy Cohen, career coach and author of The Wall Street Professionals Survival Guide .Individuals in the job search often send out resumes indiscriminately. They have been programmed to believe that more is better, Cohen says. But if the fit is imperfect, no matter how many are sent, the resume will be ignored - and, despite the fact that it was wrong from the start, it still feels like a rejection.Sure, you may be excited about a job, but that isnt reason enough to believe its a good fit - especially if you dont have the relevant skills and experience needed to succeed. If you dont meet at least the minimum qualifications of t he role, your resume may be screened out of the pool You dont necessarily have to meet every single listed qualification on the job description, but you do have to demonstrate that you are a good match for the role, says Mary Grace Gardner, career strategist at The Young Professionista . The fix for this is easy review job descriptions carefully and dont apply if you dont think youre quite there yet.On the flipside, you may not be the right fit for the role because youre over qualified. If your experience far exceeds what the job requires, your resume may be pushed to the side because hiring managers may assume they cant afford to hire you, Gardner shares. If thats the case, you have two options either look for positions that require experience and skills either equal to or slightly above what you have, or, if youre willing to accept a more junior role, make aya to highlight only the relevant parts of your skills and experience for the specific job you are applying to, Gardner su ggests. To paraphrase Occams razor, the simplest explanation is usually the best one. Sure, its possible that your application slipped through the cracks or that the recruiter just cant recognize a good resume when they see it, but the odds of that happening over and over again are slim. When you constantly hear rejections, its time to take a good look at the most important document in your job search your resume .There are many reasons your resume may not be up to par. One of the most common reasons could be that you arent using the right keywords.Resumes are scanned nowadays for keywords and phrases to demonstrate fit. If a resume is generic in its content and tries to cover as many bases as possible, it will lack the precision that is essential to demonstrate both qualifications and passion, Cohen says.In order to prove that youre a strong contender, highlight key experiences youve had that match the description of the role youre applying for and make sure to strategically use industry-specific keywords on your resume and cover letter, Gardner adds. Make sure to tailor this section for each position you apply to.Other resume mistakes you could be making typos, failing to demonstrate the impact of your actions, burying the lede, exaggerating, unexplained resume gaps, etc. If you want to avoid errors like this, share your resume with others - especially any recruiters, HR professionals, resume writers or career coaches you feel comfortable reaching out to - and incorporate their feedback. You might have heard the phrase its not what you know, its who you know before. While that may be a bit of an exaggeration - skills and experience matter plenty - it is true that a referral can help you get your foot in the door. Its no secret that the resumes that float to the top of the pile are oftentimes the ones that have a warm connection in the form of a referral from a trusted colleague. For highly competitive roles, there may be thousands of applicants an d dozens or even hundreds of people who sound just like you on an application, Gardner says. To stand out from the crowd, ask your network of family, friends and colleagues if they know anyone at the company you are applying to. If so, ask if they would be willing to refer you.Dont worry, though - youre not totally out of luck if you dont already know somebody at the company.Applying online is great, but you also need to follow this up with outreach to the hiring manager or other contacts within the company, says career coach Angela Copeland. Taking the time to do something extra will ensure you get noticed.A more subtle, but nonetheless powerful, way to network your way into a job is to ask for an informational bewerbungsinterview with someone at the company. If the informational interview goes well, you can tactfully mention youve submitted an application to the company and ask if they have any recommendations as you pursue the role Having someone with clout vouch for you can dramatically increase your chances of hearing back from a recruiter, Gardner shares.Outside of these activities, focus on building your LinkedIn network, or your social networking tool of choice. The goal is to establish key contacts at desirable companies, Cohen explains. Embrace the company by reaching out to multiple points of contact and entry. That is how you will hear about openings and potential opportunities some that may never reach the posting stage. Plus, these are the folks who will serve as your advocates lots of companies actually offer incentives for introducing terrific candidates who eventually get hired. As mentioned before, receiving rejections over and over again is probably an indication that youre doing something wrong - but if its just a select few companies youre not hearing back from, its possible that there are things occurring behind the scenes that youre not privy to.Companies may not fill every role in the way that we picture as job seekers. For example, they may have an internal candidate thats preselected but post the position anyway, Copeland says. In cases like these, it might be standard company policy to keep a position open for some specified period of time even if they already know they have a strong internal contender, Cohen adds.Other times, they may put a position on hold due to budgetary constraints or because the reporting structure has changed. Companies rarely communicate these details to the job seeker, Copeland says. Still other times, they could just be slow to process applications. They are filling many positions at one time, with many moving parts. The most important part when you encounter roadblocks like these? Dont give up hope, Copeland says. If youve verified that youre doing everything right, keep applying and eventually, you will begin to receive responses.

A Spring Cleaning Checklist to Increase Workplace Productivity

A Spring Cleaning Checklist to Increase Workplace ProductivityA Spring Cleaning Checklist to Increase Workplace ProductivityA Spring Cleaning Checklist to Increase Workplace ProductivityThe following is an excerpt from Fully Charged How Great Leaders Boost Their Organizations Energy and Ignite High Performance by Heike Bruch and Bernd Vogel (Harvard geschftsleben Review Press) Bruch and Bernd VogelEvery year in the springtime, some companies institute what we call a spring cleaning. But companies caught in the acceleration trap will want to do this immediately, regardless of the season.Instituting a Spring CleaningTypically, company leaders, particular departments, or sometimes the entire company will meet or conduct a workshop to analyze all existing activities to differentiate between what is of central strategic importance and what isnt. As a leader, you should divide all company activities into three categoriesThose considered very important and that need the most focus and energ yThose that are central but not urgent and that can easily be put on holdThose that are truly unimportant and that the company can and should stop doing immediately. At the end of this process, leaders report feeling refocused, reenergized, and refreshed, knowing that the company can now pursue its most important tasks with much mora attention and energy. For example, when the Otto Group went through a restructuring, managers found themselves burdened with 20 to 30 percent more work. So the company initiated a spring cleaning. Each executive welches asked to select a single project that he or she wanted to complete by all means. But that still left too many in play, according to Thomas Grnes, then head of central services. The list was then halved, according to each projects required investment, its value-to-cost ratio, and, in certain cases, its symbolic value for employees. For example, the final list included a redesign of reception areas and staff restaurants, which increased pride and performance and thus was a very important initiative, although the economic value was not obvious, Grnes told us.At the end of the process, the managers had reduced their activities and projects by 50 percent. The other half of the projects were filed away, to be reconsidered during future spring cleanings. To guard against bloat, the company has made this winnowing process an annual activity. Grnes stressed that in the end, the decision about which projects are initiated isnt a question of whether theres a particularly powerful executive behind them rather, the group selects only those that it can argue are reasonable to do and that are key for meeting company goals.Be Sure to Cultivate Positive ChangeOf course, a spring cleaning isnt always a positive experience. You might have trouble letting go of pet projects. And sometimes, your company culture can get in the way of the workshop. For example, in a culture where commitment and reliability are guiding values, you might find it particularly hard not to complete activities youve already started.Keep in mind, too, that apart from escaping acceleration or using spring cleaning as an annual process, you can also use the method quite effectively when the company is engaged in a change involving rationalization, cost-cutting, or streamlining.Often, the beginning of such change processes spawns new executive responsibilities on top of your old ones, as well as added acceleration of company activities, leading to job stress and exhaustion. By introducing a spring cleaning in the midst of such change, you reduce ineffective activities that only hinder forward movement. Finally, you can also use spring cleaning when evaluating the results of an employee survey or when measuring organizational energy. Typically after such a survey, companies conduct workshops to generate ways to improve the problems that employees identified. Our research has shown that, far from being helpful, these workshops often just add more st ress to the workforce since they usually generate new tasks and responsibilities. In companies already operating under the pressure of increasing business growth, employees see such new responsibilities as just more dead weight, additional work, and needless bureaucracy. In extreme cases, especially in companies already caught in an acceleration trap, employees purposefully list only positive responses in company surveys, simply to keep their workload from increasing making the whole process a farce.A Spring Cleaning ChecklistChallenge your company by asking, What should we stop doing?Use the spring-cleaning method regularly, ideally every year and especially during change processes or after employee opinion surveys. When you do decide on a spring cleaning, follow a specific, standardized protocol that is well understood by all participants.Continually check the strategic importance of goals, tasks, and projects, and eliminate less-important activities.Use three categories to differe ntiate activities top priority, on hold, and stop doing.Ask yourself, What activities today would we not start again if we had not already begun them?Use spring cleaning at both the company level and the division or work-group level.Involve all managers in the process.Reprinted by permission of Harvard Business Review Press. Why Happiest and Unhappiest Careers Are Unique to You

Why Happiest and Unhappiest Careers Are Unique to You Why Happiest and Unhappiest Careers Are Unique to You A serious component of a happy life is a career that fulfills your dreams and goals- and yes, makes you happy too. The happiest careers consist of the jobs that will make your heart sing  as you go off to work every morning, but those jobs will be different for different people. A career that would make you happiest might make another person miserable. For example, working as a kindergarten teacher and pending your day with  5-year-olds might be a dream job for you. But to another person, that job could be a nightmare of epic proportions. To find the happiest career for you and avoid the unhappy careers that would fill every day  with sorrow, consider five topics that will help you get started on the right path to making the best decision. Money Most people want to earn more money, but an amount of money necessary to make you feel comfortable does exist and that amount depends on your cost of living and your expectations. If you grew up with parents who earned six-figure incomes, you will have more difficulty finding happiness with a $30,000 household income than a person who grew up with parents who were poor You may think that you need to pick a career in which you will make a lot of money to have your happiest career, but you need to know that trade-offs exist for high-salaried jobs. Yes, you can make a lot of money as a partner in a big law firm, but will that job make you happy? Would earning a modest salary running your own shop make you happier? No universal answer exists for that question, but you need to think about it to create the happiest career for you. Finding Comfort in Your Own Skin If nothing makes you happier than seeing options all lined up neatly in rows, youll probably enjoy a career that involves order- like accounting or chemistry. If you live for beauty, designing is probably a better choice. If you love talking with people, a job that requires you to work from home, typing furiously away on the computer with little outside contact is not the happiest career for you. Incidentally, a lot of different jobs within career lines that can meet different requirements for happiness are available for you to pursue. If you love science and medicine and you love people, maybe a general physicians job would be the happiest career for you. If you love science and medicine but are an introvert who would rather not spend a lot of time with other humans, you still can become a doctor- but maybe one who specializes in research and doesnt have to talk with actual patients all the time. Work-Life Balance Some people love to travel. They love new sights, new sounds, new smells. They love meeting different people and the adventure of getting around a new city or a new country. This type of person would love a job that involved a lot of international travel. Another person wants to come home by 5 p.m.  and cant get any rest sleeping in a hotel. Some people want flexibility. They want to take time off to volunteer in their childrens school classroom. They want to take tennis lessons during the day. Maybe they want to work from 6  a.m.-3 p.m. instead of from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Theres nothing wrong with either of those preferences, but if your preference is strong, you will have more difficulty finding a career that will make you happy. Internal Happiness While you want a career that contributes to your happiness, if you expect your career to solve all of your other problems and bring you pure joy, you need to take a step back. The wrong career can make you miserable, but any tolerable job can lead to happiness if the rest of your life is in balance. A great career wont fix a rotten marriage, but a good career can make it easier to focus on your marriage. A career that is perfect for your personality still wont bring you happiness if youve got other problems that you need to solve. Get out of debt, get counseling, and get away from toxic people. Fixing these matters will make every job happier. Networking Look around. Talk to people. When business networking is encouraged, this is what advisors are talking about- talking to people to identify your potential happiest career and to learn what jobs are available. Yes, your network to find specific jobs and help others find work, but you also use your network to find out what is available. Career day at your high school or college just wont cut it. When you let people know what your talents and needs are and ask them if they know anybody with similar talents, youll find that doors open up. And then, you can talk to those people about what they do. - Suzanne Lucas is a freelance writer who spent 10 years in corporate human resources, where she hired, fired, managed the numbers, and double-checked with the lawyers.

6 victim mentalities to fight during your job search

6 victim mentalities to fight during your job search 6 victim mentalities to fight during your job search Everyone looks at the world through different filters based on their upbringing, environment, experience, and attitude. The victim mentality is one of those unfortunate lenses that even experienced professionals sometimes play into when searching for a job. When you’re on a job hunt, don’t chase your tail by giving in to victim mentalities. Outside circumstances work against you. Layoffs happen. You mess up on the job. You need to gain more skills. No positions are open. It’s typically a mixed bag of happenings that land you where you are now, and it doesn’t mean that you’re not good enough or that there are no opportunities to be had.You need to recast yourself as the hero of your career journey, while remaining honest with yourself, and lead your job search in a positive and proactive direction. Realize that you can take charge of your career journey, rather than playing into these six victim mentalities.1. Rejected too many timesVictim Mentality: “Everywhere I’ve appl ied turned me down. No one wants me.”Rejection stings and too much rejection can make you feel like giving up. It’s easier to give up on the job hunt. Think of it from the perspective of a fisherman. Being out in the hot sun with only so much food, energy and bait can wear you down after a while. When your resources drain, it’s common to reach a burnout point. Leave the line in as you fish for your job, but take it easy on yourself. Focus on taking care of your mind, heart and body. You may rest more easily knowing that only 2% of applicants get an interview, and remember to apply for the job as it’s outlined. Your career objective should match the role.2. Not good enoughVictim Mentality: “My experience and education aren’t good enough for this role.”People typically dislike uncertainty. So, they shortchange themselves instead of facing change and risk.Counteract negative self-talk by focusing on times when you excelled, exceeded expectations and were more than good eno ugh. Challenge your inner bully by laughing and probing the suggested illogical fallacies by asking a question like “What evidence do I have for and against this?”3. The bad appleVictim Mentality: “I’ve been laid off or fired too many times. No one will hire me.”Folks say that one bad apple will turn the whole batch, rotting every good apple around. That’s simple oxidation. It’s not the apple’s fault. Consider the circumstances, and be honest with yourself. If you were previously late to work, and that’s a part of why you were laid off or terminated, focus on how you that experience helped you grow as a professional. Perhaps, you freed up stress from your life and developed a bedtime ritual before going to sleep, which signals your body that it’s time to sleep.Polish your resume, and prepare yourself to tell the positive side of the story. Explain how you arrived at a solution and what you decided to do with your time.Look at times when you walked away because yo ur expectations differed from an employer’s expectations. You changed the situation by redirecting your energies. Many people wait too long to leave a job when they’re unhappy and get fired in the end. Was that you?4. Taking whatever comesVictim Mentality: “I must take whatever job offers I get, even if they treat me poorly or pay me poorly. That’s the way of it, and I have to consider myself fortunate.”Too many people work too hard, without recognition, only to burn out. When they leave a toxic work environment, they’re likely to enter another one if they don’t stop the pattern in advance. Weigh the pros and cons. Accepting poor treatment, unfair wages and inadequate benefits devalues you as a person and a professional. Does it get you where you want to be five years from now? Instead of counting yourself “lucky,” aim for companies that genuinely value their team members. Read employee reviews. Research the companies. Find out if you’re a fit, and the results wi ll be better for everyone involved. If a potential employer offers you low pay, counter with a better but fair wage, and be prepared to explain why they should take you up on the counteroffer. Look at your needs, and come to the table with confidence in your skills. If the company isn’t wealthy, counter with alternatives they can afford, such as flextime that allows you to work from home on certain days.5. Lack of appreciationVictim Mentality: “No one appreciates my accomplishments or talents.”Too much rejection and feeling invisible at previous jobs makes you feel unappreciated and undervalued as a professional. You spent time and money to develop your education and experience, and your accomplishments and talents are a reflection of that. You reach a point where you realize it’s time to move on, but consider this: Did you speak up for yourself? You put your nose to the grindstone, sacrificing your time and talents, but you need to practice self-respect as a professional. You can say “no” with grace and say “yes” with confidence when you only agree to take on tasks that are truly worthwhile and reasonable. Ask for feedback. Reward yourself. Toot your horn on paper and in person, ask for what you deserve and trust that you’ll find the right fit when you keep speaking up for yourself.6. Dry desertVictim Mentality: “No one is hiring. It’s a desert out there.”How big is the job pool you’re fishing in again? Give yourself a reality check and get creative if statistics support your claim of a desert marketplace. Deserts are dry, yes, but dwelling on that fact won’t help you in your job search.Turn to other job boards. Get on social media, and search for open roles with relevant hashtags. Reach out to your networks from college and professional associations. Get creative and consider career path alternatives, such as other industries or running your own business as a consultant or freelancer.Experts expect freelancers to make up 34% of the â €œgig” economy by 2020, and that doesn’t mean self-employed professionals live off of pennies. Many successfully leverage their skills and experience in a niche market for a living wage.Don’t fall into these victim mentality traps, or you will stay stuck and never find the right fit. Know that you deserve better. Take action to shift the negative narrative, and become a career hero. This article first appeared on Punched Clocks.

4 ways to make sure youre productive when working from home, but not alone

4 ways to make sure you're productive when working from home, but not alone 4 ways to make sure you're productive when working from home, but not alone It’s a problem as old as the concept of working from home itself: How do you stay productive when other people are around, tempting you with distractions of every shape and color? Here are some tricks to keep in mind when you’re working from home, and roommates or family members are making it difficult to get your assignments done.1. Try putting “the two-day rule” to good useGive yourself time to plan ahead.Patrick Allan, an author, screenwriter and staff writer at Lifehacker, writes about “the two-day rule.” He says that although he lived “with someone who also works from home and understands,” he’s had roommates that weren’t on the same page in the past.Referencing the “rule,” he writes: “Basically, you say you’re willing to help out with bigger things or participate in more time-consuming activities as long as you’re given some lead time. Two days, or 48 hours, gives you enough time to plan things out, get extra work done ahead of time, and let your of fice know you’ll be unavailable during a certain time window. One day is  not  enough.”2. Make sure you have a space of your ownDaniel Schwarz, founder of Airwalk Studios and editor of design at SitePoint, writes that “having your own space” is crucial when you’re working from home and roommates are around. He writes that he’s worked from home for many years.“Whether your household has a child/dog/cat/lizard or not, your own office or room is always a useful thing to have,” the post says. “If you live in a particularly noisy household (or at least one that’s not dead silent), remember that it’s their space too, and a private room for yourself means your housemates can feel free (to an extent of course) in their own home - it benefits everyone.”3. Don’t ice people out - communicate insteadThis could be a big help. Maxine Roper writes in The Guardian that when you live with other people and work from home, you should “talk to your housemates about your wo rk.”“Telling them about your daily routines and what you’re working on is likely to make them more understanding. Similarly, when work is slow, be very clear that quiet time means worry, not leisure time,” she says. “Talking about your work regularly also enforces the idea that you are working from home and not free to sort out everyone else’s admin or do their share of chores.”4. Block off the time you need to workMake sure that nothing pops up on your calendar for a good two to four hours so that you can really focus on the work you’re doing. Although you might want to run out to an event or take a last-minute invitation, you’re better off laying low for a bit so that you don’t fall behind. It’s possible to get work done at home - even when there are roommates or family members sharing the space  - with a little planning.

How to Request a Stress Leave at Work

How to Request a Stress Leave at Work How to Request a Stress Leave at Work Everyone knows that if you have the flu, you should stay home from work to recover. It’s also clear that giving birth requires time off from work. But what about stress? Can you really take a “stress leave” from work? You can, and sometimes taking a stress leave is the right thing to do. You may not see your situation strictly as needing a “stress” leave, but you may see it as experiencing burn out, anxiety, or depression. You need to apply for a leave of absence for any of these reasons in a similar way. Here’s how you should approach making the request for a stress leave from work. Determine Whether You Are Eligible for FMLA The Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) applies to companies with 50 or more employees within a 75-mile radius of the workplace. For FMLA eligibility, you must have been employed by your company for at least a year and have worked at least 1250 hours in the past 12 months. If you meet these qualifications, it’s possible that you are eligible for legal protection for your stress leave. Go to your Human Resources department and let them know you would like to take an FMLA approved absence for stress leave. They will provide you with the necessary paperwork that you must take to your doctor. Just saying you are too stressed out to work is not sufficient. When you speak with your doctor, it’s important that you speak honestly and not downplay your symptoms. She can’t make a fair evaluation if you keep saying, “It’s fine. Everything is fine. I’m just a little stressed.” Remember, stress can affect you physically as well as mentally. Web MD says “Stress seems to worsen or increase the risk of conditions like obesity, heart disease, Alzheimers disease, diabetes, depression, gastrointestinal problems, and asthma.” Stress is not  something you should ignore. Your doctor will fill out the paperwork. To qualify for the stress leave, you must be suffering from a serious medical condition. Not all stress causes an FMLA eligible condition. But, if your doctor agrees that you are suffering from a severe condition and that you are unable to work during this time period, you will be eligible for protected leave. You have 15 days to return the FMLA paperwork, so make sure you get it back into HR. It’s also okay to send the paperwork in with a spouse or a friend if your condition prohibits you from going into the office. What Does a Stress Leave Look Like? This will depend on what your doctor instructs you to do. It’s vital that you follow her instructions and don’t just treat this as a vacation. Even though you won’t go into the office, you are not on a vacation. If your leave is approved under FMLA, then you cannot do any work during the time you are off of work. Other than answering a quick question, you should not check your work email, participate in phone calls or meetings, or do any work. You should focus on your health and alleviating the stress which caused you to take the stress leave. FMLA is unpaid leave from work. Depending on your company’s internal guidelines, they may require you to use your paid vacation and sick leave up front so that you receive a paycheck while you are on stress leave. Some companies require you to do so, while others do not. You may also have short-term disability insurance that will cover at least a portion of your pay while you are on stress leave. Check with your HR benefits coordinator or your benefits provider. Can You Take Intermittent FMLA for Stress Leave? Yes, you can. If your doctor feels that a shortened work week or other accommodation is vital to help you with your serious stress condition, intermittent FMLA is possible. FMLA allows eligible employees to take up to 60 days off per year, and you do not have to take the days off consecutively. What If You Are Not Eligible? If your company isn’t large enough, or you haven’t worked there long enough, or your doctor doesn’t consider your condition severe enough to leave work, you won’t have a protected leave of absence. This doesn’t mean that your company cannot approve a stress leave, it’s just that they don’t have to guarantee you a position when you return. Certainly, do ask about taking time off as unpaid personal leave to get the rest and treatment you need. Many companies will offer you unpaid time off even without the FMLA time off. Your state or region may also have different requirements for employers so ask your HR department. It’s important that you are healthy to contribute your best at work, and that means both physically and mentally healthy. If you feel yourself burning out, consider stress leave as a possible best option for you.

The Over 40 and Overqualified Job Seeker

The Over 40 and Overqualified Job Seeker The Over 40 and Overqualified Job Seeker There are a lot of unfounded beliefs for job seekers when it comes to landing employment â€" especially for those who are older and/or overqualified. These are two of the biggest concerns we hear from job hunters 40 and over. “I’m not being interviewed because of my age.” “I’m not being offered a position because I’m overqualified.” The first thing to look at when they voice these concerns is the rate of job interviews they are actually landing. The average interview rate is 10 percent when you are applying for jobs and we find that in most cases, those 40-plus job seekers are achieving at least that percentage. So the question is this, are they really being passed over because they are older or overqualified? In some cases the answer is probably yes, they are viewed as too old or experienced for the available position. However, this is also true for those candidates that are perceived as too young or inexperienced or even factors like belonging to controversial groups or attending the wrong college â€" yes â€" this happens! Although some are fair and others are biased most hiring managers use certain criteria when they evaluate potential candidates so unfortunately some applicants will be excluded based on these criteria. So how does an older job hunter minimize their chances of being the one passed over? By strategically sharing their background: Don’t show more than 15 years of work experience on your resume Don’t include college completion dates unless you’re a brand new graduate Just doing these two things will go a long way to present you as an attractive candidate. How do you avoid the chances of being perceived as overqualified job seeker? Only present information that is relevant to the job you are pursuing i.e. you are targeting jobs as an accounting specialist â€" don’t emphasize your work as an accounting manager, downplay your leadership background and play up your skills in hands-on execution. Using these few tactics, job hunters 40 and over can minimize the chances of being perceived as too old or overqualified. Over 40 and need help beefing up your resume? We’re the best at what we do â€" let us prove it contact us today to get started!

Job Seekers Tell Us the 20 Weirdest Job Interview Questions

Job Seekers Tell Us the 20 Weirdest Job Interview Questions Job Seekers Tell Us the 20 Weirdest Job Interview Questions 6In March of this year, we ran a contest looking to hear your weirdest job interview questions posed during your search. There was a great response, and we were able to hear just how crazy interview questions can get. And, although we have heard of oddball interview questions before, the 20 below take the cake! Here are some of the weirdest job interview questions asked of job seekers: “If you were a pizza topping, what topping would you be and why?” Lisa “Does your husband mind if you work?” Cindi “So what do you want to be when you grow up?” Harvey “So, what’s your dress size?” Kate “Do you bake?” Linda “Do you like to walk on the moon?” Melissa “If you were a crayon, what color would you be and why?” JeanMaria “Forest or the Trees?” Kirk “If both your parents were drowning, and you could only save one, which one would you save and why?” Elizabeth “How would you convince someone to do something they didn’t want to do?” Cathleen “If you could be any toy, which toy would you be?” Marcella “What is the most historical event that has ever taken place?” Marcy “You’ve been given an elephant; you can’t give it away or sell it. What would you do with the elephant?” Pat “If you were in a salad, what ingredient would you be?” Karen “What would you do if someone walked in the building with a live snake and asked you to identify it?” Donna “If a movie was made about your life, which actress would play you?” Kathleen “What’s the last thing you watched on TV and why did you choose to watch it?” Katharine “Why are manholes round?” Melissa “If there was an elephant in your car, how would you get it out?” Erin “If you were a car, what car would you be and why?” Ellen Why Employers Ask Weird Job Interview Questions Clearly, there are A LOT of interesting questions posed to job seekers. While a few of the above could be borderline illegal interview questions, the others are asked for a number of reasons. Some of the reasons employers have embraced weird questions is so they can see how well you think on your feet. While some of the oddball questions may not have a correct answer, some do and can be used for some of the following scenarios: To see how candidates set priorities To see their planning abilities To understand reasoning processes To watch candidates problem solve To see if a candidate can get the job done How to Tackle Some of the Weirdest Job Interview Questions How are job seekers supposed to prepare for interview questions? Since many are off the wall and can vary based on the job a person is interviewing for, it’s better to focus on the process of answering rather than the answer itself. Sometimes its in the details where the impression is made. Before going on an interview, brush up on some of the popular odd interview questions and practice how you would answer them. Don’t be to hasty and blurt out the first thing that comes to mind, especially if you don’t have a filter and do have a love for sarcasm. Don’t take too long to answer though. Spend a few seconds repeating the question as it sinks in and then give them your best answer. Stay calm and try to focus, but don’t mumble or stare off into space. Take a deep breath and perhaps give a (non-awkward) smile. Try not to focus so much on giving the right answer. Most of these questions are designed to evaluate how you think and reason. For instance, if I were a toy, I’d be Legos or Play-Doh because then I could be molded into anything! Readers, which of the weirdest job interview questions would you prefer to be asked?
